“Pause Before You Post”
A 13-year-old receives a hurtful comment on a group chat. Instead of firing back, they take a deep breath, walk away, and talk to a friend before replying.
A six-step framework empowering young people to respond to online harm
with calm, clarity, and courage.
Founder Varsh Varun · Student, Middle School, Scottsdale Preparatory Academy
S.H.I.E.L.D. began during summer break when Varsh Varun, a middle school student at Scottsdale Preparatory Academy, noticed how online interactions were affecting his peers. He wanted to create something simple enough for kids to remember, yet powerful enough to make a real difference.
After developing the framework, Varsh presented it to the Scottsdale City Council, making it a civic-minded program that bridges youth leadership and community safety.
S.H.I.E.L.D. is more than an acronym — it’s a movement for digital empathy and civic engagement, built on teamwork between students, families, educators, and city leaders.
Created by a student, for students — authentic, peer-to-peer impact.
Presented to the Scottsdale City Council, uniting youth and government.
Six clear steps recalled in any moment of online stress.
Designed to grow from schools to families, cities, and beyond.

Six powerful steps — simple enough to remember in any moment, strong enough to make a real difference.
Pause before reacting. Take a breath and think clearly before responding to anything online.
Reach out to a trusted adult or authority. Use in-app reporting tools when needed.
Don't engage with negativity. Block or mute harmful accounts to protect your peace.
Lead with empathy and respect. Use your words to build others up, not tear them down.
Save screenshots or messages that document what happened. Evidence helps adults take action.
Step away from devices when needed. Protecting your mental health is always the right choice.
Each S.H.I.E.L.D. step comes to life through real-world situations teens actually face online.

During a gaming session, a teen notices another player being bullied. They screenshot the chat, tell a parent, and use the in-game report feature.
A classmate keeps sending rude DMs. The teen quietly blocks the account and focuses on positive interactions instead.
The teen sees a peer being teased in comments and posts a supportive message instead. Their kindness sparks others to follow.
After witnessing cyberbullying, the teen saves screenshots and timestamps before reporting to the school counselor.
Overwhelmed by social media drama, the teen decides to spend the afternoon biking and journaling. They return online refreshed.
